Improve your skills in one of the world’s fastest-growing sectors.

As a student earning the graduate certificate* in Clean Energy & Sustainability (a joint venture of UMass Boston's College of Management and the School for the Environment), you will acquire the skills you need to get ahead in this rapidly growing sector and engage with local businesses, nonprofit and social enterprise organizations, and other groups committed to building a more sustainable world.

Massachusetts is at the forefront of sustainability, and this certificate will position you to take advantage of the growing markets and career opportunities in energy efficiency, smart grid, carbon trading, and related financial and professional services.

*Course credit from a certificate will count toward a graduate degree should you choose to continue.

In this program, you will:

  • Analyze environmental challenges and evaluate solutions from a multidisciplinary perspective
  • Gain knowledge of sustainable technologies, policies, and practices to help organizations reduce their environmental impact and increase sustainability
  • Develop skills in project management and communication to effectively implement sustainability initiatives in organizations

Career Possibilities

Evaluate an organization's environmental impact and make confident recommendations as a sustainability analyst. Identify energy-saving opportunities and develop strategies to reduce energy consumption as an energy efficiency consultant. Or, analyze environmental policies and regulations to evaluate their impact as a policy analyst. These are just a few of the possibilities.

How to Apply

Applicants must meet general graduate admission requirements in addition to the following program-specific requirements:

  • A bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited U.S. institution of recognized standing or an international equivalent at the time of enrollment
  • A minimum, cumulative GPA of 2.75 on a 4.0 scale (or international equivalent) in all undergraduate work
  • Official transcripts for all institutions where you have earned more than 6 credits
  • Statement of purpose
  • One (1) letter of recommendation
  • Statement of intent essay: This statement is your opportunity to show the graduate admissions committee why you wish to pursue graduate study, as well as your specific interest and goals.
  • If applicable, request official TOEFL, IELTS, PTE, or Duolingo scores to be sent to the University of Massachusetts Boston

Deadlines & Cost

Deadlines: June 15 for fall, October 1 (priority deadline) or December 1 (final deadline) for spring

Application Fee: The nonrefundable application fee is $75. UMass Boston alumni and current students that plan to complete degree requirements prior to graduate enrollment can submit the application without paying the application fee.
