As a student of UMass Boston’s online Nursing Educator Certificate, you will acquire the skills you need to move into an educator role in an academic, a clinical education, or a nursing practice setting. The program offers online asynchronous courses that address contemporary teaching and learning practices. It's designed to be fully online, providing an accessible, flexible option for working professionals.

In this program, you will:

  • Gain the ability to design, develop, and evaluate nursing curricula, ensuring that educational programs meet the needs of learners and align with professional standards
  • Acquire effective teaching strategies, instructional methods, and assessment techniques to facilitate student learning and engagement in nursing education settings
  • Develop leadership skills to effectively contribute to the development and implementation of nursing education programs, policies, and quality improvement initiatives

Career Possibilities

Pursue teaching positions in colleges, universities, and vocational schools as an academic nurse educator. Provide insightful on-the-job training to other nurses and healthcare professionals as a clinical nursing educator. Or, deliver continuing education programs and coordinate professional development initiatives for nursing staff as a staff development educator. How to Apply

Application Checklist:

  • Completed online application form
  • Goal statement
  • Official transcripts from all schools attended (BS degree or higher in nursing from accredited college or university required)
  • GPA 3.0 or higher
  • 1 Letter of recommendation (preferably professional)
  • Submit evidence of current nursing license

Deadlines: April 1 for fall

Application Fee: The nonrefundable application fee is $75. UMass Boston alumni and current students that plan to complete degree requirements prior to graduate enrollment can submit the application without paying the application fee.

  • NURSNG 607 - Evidenced Based Teaching Practices 3 Credit(s)
  • NURSNG 608 - The Nurse Educator in the Academic Setting 3 Credit(s)
  • NURSNG 609 - The Nurse Educator in the Practice Setting 3 Credit(s)
  • NURSNG 612 - Transition from Nurse Clinician to Nurse Educator 3 Credit(s)

Graduation Criteria

Complete twelve credits from four courses including one required course, one nursing elective, and two additional electives.

Practicum: Practicum is highly recommended, but optional. NURSNG 608, NURSNG 609, and NURSNG 612 offer an optional clinical practicum component in the academic or clinical practice setting.

Statute of Limitations: Three years
