About Strong Women Strong Girls

Strong Women, Strong Girls is an award-winning curriculum-based mentoring organization that works to counter the social pressures that discourage girls in under-resourced communities by combining multi-generational group mentoring to build a community of strength around every girl. They are undergoing a strategic process to align ourselves with a racial and gender equity and justice framework throughout the entire organization. Framing the mentor program and curriculum as a response to systemic racial and gender inequities that girls, and particularly girls of color, face in Boston is a component of the process.

College mentors serve girls from 3rd-5th grade (8-11 years old) by engaging them in curriculum-based programming each week to:

  • Introduce them to college and careers
  • Help increase self-confidence
  • Build strong leadership skills
  • Foster a safe, strong female community around them

The UMass Boston Chapter

As one of the seven college chapters in Boston, the chapter at UMass Boston identifies mentorship, inclusion, leadership, and empowerment as core values centric to the organization's mission. Utilizing these principles, they host community outreach events and social justice events around gender, race, and sexuality. They focus on educating as well as promoting a safe and comfortable environment to help build community within the UMB chapter, grow confidence and trust in having conversations about intersectionality, racism, and gender, and foster continuous learning and increased knowledge.
