Our History
The first-in-the nation Graduate Certificate Program for Women in Politics & Public Policy was founded by Betty Taymor (1921-2021) in 1968 at Simmons College. At that time it was called the Program for Women in Politics & Government. The program later moved to Boston College and finally to UMass Boston in 1992 with the support of the then chancellor, Sherry Penny. In 2014, the name of the graduate certificate program changed to Gender, Leadership, and Public Policy (GLPP) to reflect an expanding understanding of gender. The GLPP curriculum also became a track option in UMass Boston's Master of Public Administration (MPA) degree program.
