About Our Department
The Philosophy Department at UMass Boston is dedicated to helping students explore fundamental philosophical questions, including morality, justice, truth, knowledge, and the self. Our goal is not only to foster academic understanding but also to cultivate reflective and responsible citizenship. Graduates leave equipped with strong interpretive, analytical, and argumentative skills, along with a broad knowledge of the history of ideas that informs their approach to contemporary challenges. Philosophy majors and minors go on to find diverse career opportunities in fields such as law, government, tech, medicine, journalism, the arts, business, education, and academia.
We view philosophy as an engaged discipline, where theoretical understanding translates into meaningful impacts on our practical lives as individuals and citizens. Our faculty members have concentrations in ethics, applied ethics, law, political philosophy, American philosophy, mind, language, and the history of philosophy.
