  • ROBERT C. WOOD ANNUAL LUNCHEON AND LECTURE | 2025

ROBERT C. WOOD ANNUAL LUNCHEON AND LECTURE | 2025

Former U.S. Department of Transportation Deputy Secretary Polly Trottenberg is the 2025 Robert C. Wood Visiting Professor in Public and Urban Affairs. Please join us for her informative discussion on the future of our nation’s mass transit systems. At a time when many transit systems are still recovering from the pandemic, facing budget shortfalls and investment needs, many in our country question the value of public investment. We look forward to a lively discussion of these issues as we “mind the gap” in mass transit needs across the nation

    Mind the Gap:

Mass Transit, Equity and the Future of Public Goods in American Democracy

Each year the John W. McCormack Graduate School of Policy and Global Studies’ Robert C. Wood Visiting Professorship in Public and Urban Affairs program brings a distinguished public leader to campus for a lecture and conversation to engage students, faculty, and community members in discussions on public policy and public service. This year’s theme, “Democracy, Inequality, and Public Transportation” addresses the multifaceted topics that underscore the ways that transportation issues intersect with transformations occurring in the nation’s democracy. Polly Trottenberg, former Secretary of Transportation for the Biden Administration, is the 2025 Robert C. Wood Visiting Professor, and she will give a lecture titled, “Mind the Gap: Mass Transit, Equity and the Future of Public Goods in American Democracy”. Trottenberg will discuss the future of our nation’s mass transit systems and the challenges and opportunities they face in this time of political transition. The event will be held on Tuesday, May 13th, 2025, from 12 noon to 2:30 pm in the Campus Center Ballroom at UMass Boston. In addition to the public lecture, the event includes a free luncheon and the conferral of the 2025 Robert C. Wood Student Internship Award.
