MBTA

Conveniently located just a mile from JFK/UMass Station, UMass Boston is easily accessible by public transportation. The campus is served by the Red Line, as well as the Greenbush, Kingston, and Middleborough/Lakeville commuter rail lines. Additionally, Route 8 operates daily from Kenmore Square, and Route 16 is available during peak commuting hours from Forest Hills.

2026 Spring Semester Pass Information

  • Spring MBTA Passes: The Spring 2026 MBTA Semester Pass sales period is open from Monday, December 1, 2025 through Friday, January 9, 2026. Registered students may purchase a pass until the ordering deadline. 
  • Purchase Link: Purchase your Spring 2026 MBTA Semester Pass.
  • Distribution Method: Spring 2026 MBTA Semester Passes will be available for pickup at multiple locations on campus beginning Monday, January 26. Students will receive an email with pickup instructions after the pass ordering deadline.
  • Pass Validity Period: Spring MBTA semester passes are valid from February 1 to May 31, 2026.
  • Plan Your Commute: Plan your commute using the MBTA Trip Planner.
  • Pricing Information: View MBTA Semester Pass Pricing Information.
  • Link and Bus Passes: Link, Local, and Express bus passes are issued via CharlieCards once per semester. Link and bus passes can be replaced if lost.
  • Zone and Boat Passes: Zone and Boat passes are issued monthly on CharlieTickets. All passes are included in the total semester pass cost. Zone and Boat passes cannot be replaced.
  • Refund Policy: MBTA passes are non-refundable and non-exchangeable, so make your purchase decision carefully.
  • Payment Process: The semester pass cost will be added automatically to your Spring term bill. Cash, personal checks, or debit/credit cards are not accepted.
  • Liability: The university is not liable for lost or damaged passes and cannot replace commuter rail or boat passes.
  • Subsidy for Undergraduate Students: A $20 nonrefundable fee on undergraduate term bills subsidizes MBTA passes by 50%, available on a first-come, first-served basis. For subsidy inquiries, contact studentgovernment@umb.edu

MBTA Pass Replacement Information

  • Lost or stolen Semester Link or Bus pass? Request a complimentary replacement using our online form.
  • Eligibility for Replacement: Replacement approval is available only for Link or Bus passes purchased through the university's semester pass program.
  • Non-Refundable and Non-Replaceable Passes: MBTA Commuter Rail and Boat passes, including Zone 1A, are nonrefundable and nonreplaceable if lost or stolen, even if lost during mail transit.

Employee Transportation Benefits

Through the Qualified Transportation Benefits Program (QTBP), faculty and staff are eligible for a pre-tax benefit program that includes public transit expenses. Please visit Human Resources for further information and contact hr@umb.edu with any questions.

Park & Pedal Facilities

  • Register your CharlieCard semester pass or obtain a blank CharlieCard at our office to access Park & Pedal facilities.
  • CharlieCard registration is required for free bike parking at all locations. Register your CharlieCard by following this link.
  • Visit the MBTA's bike parking webpage for facility locations, policies, and rules.
